Past Tense.

When the taxi pulled up to Dodger's house Lilly was a little surprised to see all the lights turned off.  She knocked on the door, however, and a second later Dodger opened the door.

"So what's it all about, huh?" Lilly started to say, but Dodger just walked back into the house.  Lilly followed him in and noticed the lights were on in the living room, although they'd been off a few minutes ago.

      "Thanks for coming," said Dodger.

"No problem.  Um, I have some questions for you."

"Wish I could give you better answers.  I don't know how, but someone called me and warned me about the crosswalk.  I was given very specific instructions to use my mom's phone and- hey, when did it stop raining?"

"Um, it didn't, Dodger.  It's still rain- huh!  It was when I pulled up."

"Well, I wouldn't mind if it wasn't apparently perfectly dry outside!"

       "What?"

       "Look!"

The two opened the door and looked outside.  Sure enough, the sun was shining and the whole area was precipitation free.  Slowly Dodger closed the door and the two walked into the kitchen.

"This is just like being in an adventure story!" exclaimed Lilly as the two sat down at the table.  "Say, I could go for a bite."

"Sorry," Dodger explained apologetically, "I've got nothing in the refrigerator at all."

"Really?  Did it just disappear like the rain?"

"So it seems.  I don't understand what's happening, but it's really strange.  Why are these little details different?  It's not like we're in an alternate universe or something."

"Well, yeah.  But it's still really weird?  So you don't know who called you?"

"Not a clue.  The voice sounded familiar, but that's all I know.  Still can't understand why I couldn't use my Dad's phone, though."

"Wait.  Doesn't he take it with him everywhere?"

"Well, yeah.  Oh, right.  But how did my mystery caller know that?  Why couldn't I just use my phone to call you?  I don't get it!  What does it all mean?"

"Your guess is as good as mine, but I think we'd better find out.  Hey, isn't that your phone ringing?"

       "Huh, boy!  Number withheld. Hello?"

It was the familiar voice, sure enough.

"Did you have to invite Lilly over?"

"Well, she is my best friend."

"I know...in fact, to be fair, I would have done the same thing in your shoes.  Iron sharpens iron, as Proverbs 27:17 says."

       "Who are you, anyway?"

       "I really can't say."

"I'll have to insist.  I don't know why, but you seem to know a whole bunch of stuff that no one else would or even could know!  The weather has changed almost instantly, the refrigerator is empty- I don't understand what gives, and I want to know NOW."

"Put me on the line with Lilly, please."

"Not until you answer my question."

       "Please."

With a resigned expression Dodger passed the phone to Lilly.

"Hello, stranger!  Why'd you want to talk to me?"

"Would you believe it's because I wanted to chat with an old friend from the past?"

       "Ha!  Good one, Dodger!  Wait..."
